My goal that I would like to address is the goal to Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility.

Resources Needed: I believe the more "toys" I have to interest the students the easier it is to promote digital citizenship. Along with these new and exciting devices for display such as a pocket pc, tablet, net book, etc. I will need a way to demonstrate appropriate use. I just received my new Pocket PC that I can display the screen through my projector in my classroom. I now will be able to show how to access a lot of the features such as rss readers and calendars. Right now most of these devices have been purchased by me personally so I have reservations about loaning them to students. I would love for some class loaners so students can experiment.

Information Needed: I am learning constantly about the new resource available to me through different means. Such as flip cameras are all new to me and I am researching them frantically because some students want to know if they should purchase one for school projects.

I feel that I am achieving this goal everyday, providing appropriate times to use their personal tools they bring to class.

  1. Nate,

It is astounding how many technology tools are out there and the rate at which technology changes. I was looking at a colleagues iPhone this week and it is amazing the number of applications it has – skype, GPS, video camera, all sorts of music apps, constellation finder, great still camera, and hundreds more. I think an iPhone will be my next technology purchase this year. My only concern is the addictive nature of being 'connected' 24/7.

  2. Nate,

It sounds like you and your students may be well "tricked out" with tech tools. Since you would like to have items to loan, perhaps you could look into grant programs. I think that there are a few out there. I am sure if you dig deep enough you might find them. You are the second person to mention flip cameras in our blog group. I am clearly out of loop on that. I will have to google it because you both seem to think it is a useful tool. I agree that you can have your students better engaged by reaching them through tools of interest. This is one way we can easily differentiate instruction.

  3. Nate,

It sounds like you and your students are embracing technology, which is great to hear. Hopefully your school and district will get on board as well so you don’t have to be the one buying all the technology tools for your classroom. Your mentioning of a student interested in a flip camera got me thinking that having students research types of cameras/cell phones and compare and contrast them would be a great learning situation. It would be something that interests them and it would have real world uses.
